I wrote this as a reply to someone on FaceBook who is believing her vote does not count, and why bother. I have left off her name. But I thought it should be mentioned in a wider capacity.

__________don’t be discouraged. Yes, people like you and me are being screwed by the wealthier, and “more important” folks (quotes because I don’t believe anyone is better, nor more important, than I am). And you. But it is people like you and me, who keep struggling, keep paying attention, and keep voting, that keeps this country from going into total anarchy. And we outnumber them. Our problems are that we cannot afford to all go and meet in one place and fight them in numbers. It is going to take a real revolution to get things to change. America is a country that was established by those who did not like the tyranny of King George, who did not want taxation without representation, who did not want to have to adhere to a specific religion, a truly equal country according to Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. In those days there was not all the communication we have today, the Electoral College made sense because people had to travel by horseback in bad weather, on bad roads, to get where the states’ votes could be tallied, the use of guns in a wild land where these settlers made enemies of the natives, and bad men roamed the roads, was a necessity, and those brave men and women fought that revolution. Today, with good highways, air flight, electricity and communications of all kind, we don’t need the guns that are now used more for recreation and crime, we don’t need the Electoral College, and money plays way too much importance in elections, we again are living in a place where tyranny reigns (corporations, wealth), and most folks are paying taxes for benefits they never see because it all goes to the wealthy. Just think – 238 years after we established this country with a revolution against tyranny and taxes without representation, and for religious freedom – we are again living in a country that needs a revolution, against taxation without representation, against a forced religion, and against weapons of mass destruction (the guns we would normally use for war). We are right back to where we were 238 years ago, but now it can all go against us faster, and we can hear about it faster. Yet so many sit back and take it, and think we have made progress. It is a foolish people we are, who allowed this to happen, and a total ignorance of what it took to get right back to this place – a circle.
